    • Mexico Elks Lodge Veterans Essay Contest winners

    • Members of Mexico Elks Lodge No. 919 held a Veterans Essay Contest recently with more than 100 entries from eighth grade students. On Friday, the top six winners, two each from Mexico Middle School, St. Brendan Catholic School, and Missouri Military Academy had the opportunity to read their essays in front of the veterans at the Missouri Veterans’ Home. The students Austin Hoover, Larry Dye (MMS), Julianne Wortmann, Brock Fuemmeler (St. Brendan), and Maverick Jones and Jack Moore (MMA), were picked up at their respective schools in a limo and escorted to the veterans’ home by the Patriot Guard Riders, Gary Songer, Dean Patrick and Ron Boswell, along with a police escort. The theme of the essays was “What Does A Veteran Mean To Me?” The students who read their essays wrote about how veterans are role models, their family members who served in the military, and the sacrifices the veterans made for this country.
