MMS eighth-graders take first place in Hannibal Volleyball Tournament
First place in Saturday’s Hannibal Volleyball Tournament went to Mexico Middle School eighth graders, who went 2-1 in pool play before defeating Montgomery County 25-12, 25-17 in the championship match and raising their record to 13-1-1.
“This was a good tournament for us, definitely a learning experience,” MMS coach Josie Stewart said. “We started off the morning on a positive note with wins against Hannibal and Kirksville.
“When we played Centralia, we played out of rhythm. After losing the first set, we played careful and not aggressive and ended up paying for that with a lot more mistakes than usual and the loss.
“But in the championship match, my aggressive team was back and the girls stepped up their play in every aspect of the game,” Stewart added. “I think Elaine Brinker led in most serves, most kills, most assists and most passes; Sydney Schutte has been playing very well defensively, and Kelsie McCubbins has shown tremendous improvement lately.”
Pool play scores for the Lady Bulldogs were 19-9, 19-12 vs. Hannibal; 19-9, 19-8 vs. Kirksville, plus 17-19, 16-19 vs. Centralia.
