MMA Colonels rout Wentworth, sweep series
Missouri Military Academy blasted archrival Wentworth Military Academy 10-1 to sweep the season series in soccer action Wednesday in Lexington.
The Colonels, now 15-2 on the season, defeated the Red Dragons 2-1 at MMA on Oct. 7.
“We did an excellent job of sticking to the game plan and our players executed it to perfection,” said MMA coach Capt. Ali Syed of the win. “We knew what we did wrong in the first game, and our players did not make the same mistakes this time.”
Sophomore Santiago Bou scored three times, freshman Ricardo Benavides tallied twice, and a single goal each was scored by senior Jose De Esesarte, junior Alan Gontes, sophomore Jesus Gonzalez, seniors Edgar Rodriguez and Jose Gutierrez.
Junior Luis Bueno, De Esesarte and Gonzalez each passed for two assists, and Gutierrez also added a pass leading to an MMA goal.
“Our defense marked the key players well to minimize any shots near the goal. Our aerial game on defense was particularly good, and I felt like our practice Tuesday helped a lot,” said Capt. Syed.
“On offense, we created a lot of opportunities and our players capitalized by converting those into goals.”
Capt. Syed said goalkeeper Alonso de Cosio, a junior, was outstanding, making two key saves on free kicks.
“He read the game well when coming out of the box to prevent breakaways,” said Capt. Syed.
Gontes and freshman center defender Tristan Workman were solid on defense for the Colonels, who end the regular season at home today against Canton.
winner of Canton and Montgomery County for the title at 6 p.m. Thursday at MMA.
