  • Mexico Bulldogs cross country team brought home 12 individual medals and a first-place finish at a very large meet Tuesday that included several constant rivals such as Moberly, Bowling Green and Hannibal. There continues to be some minor shuffling of the lineup on the boys and girls varsity teams that made this race have the exciting uncertainty of a season opener.
On the boys side Malik Holman continued to run near the top of the overall pack, finishing with a 17:14, (finishing fifth) but experiencing some real competition from upperclassmen runners that will motivate him to continue striving for his best at each race and practice. The other top four included: first, Dan Plunkett, senior, Pleasant Plains 16:26; second, Luke Watson, junior, Quincy Notre Dame 16:36; third, Jack Cavett, senior, Macomb 16:46; and fourth, Devin Clark, senior Monmouth-Roseville 16:57.
Varsity captain Jake Vitale, sometimes held back by minor injuries, had a break-out day and went 17:45, closely followed by co-captain Alex Shaw. These top three ran full throttle all the way. But the rest of the varsity team is supporting the effort to be champions with clutch performances in their field. Notable in Tuesday's match is that Sam Fayad passed many opponents in his medal winning performance.
On the junior varsity boys side there were several medalists, and some athletes working their way toward the varsity lineup. Taking an early lead and maintaining it most of the three-mile race was Haden Hobbs, finishing first overall out of 64 competitors. The girls team looked very strong with a very respectable seventh place finish out of 15 complete teams. They also beat rivals Bowling Green and Hannibal, and were edged out by Moberly by just a few points.
Team Captain Maddie Prince came in first for the DXC team with a tenacious performance. Jamie Brandow also looked strong most of the race, trading Maddie for the lead a few times.
The most encouraging thing about Tuesday's win was that last time DXC earned second-place overall at this race, ended up getting second also in district and taking a team to state. What does winning first at this race say for MHS chances looking forward to the district competition? "Predictions are a risky business, but if these boys and girls stay healthy, I think it's safe to say Mexico is a powerhouse," stated MHS Coach John Wilbers.

Mexico Middle School cross country team competed in a meet Monday at Bowling Green. The boys came in six out of seven teams with the girls finishing fifth out of five teams.
According to Bucky Green, MMS coach, the kids were really tentative at the start, in their first cross country race. "I really felt that today was a good initial experience for our team. It will now be interesting to see how we respond to the next race at Fulton Saturday. Medals were awarded to the top 20 runners, including Buldogs Marcus Moore, Caleb Robertson, Austin Loyd and Elizabeth Finck.
