Softball and volleyball – with photos

The offense is there, the defense is there, the pitching is there and the runs are there – add that all together and you get an undefeated Lady Bulldogs softball team.
The Lady Bulldogs latest victim was in a makeup game Wednesday night at home against the Boonville Pirates with the outcome 13-3 in Mexico's favor.
The Lady Bulldogs began their latest victory with one run in the first inning when Brooke Costley led off with a single and advanced to second on a wild pitch. Anne Baker hit a single to advance Costley to third. Costley was then able to score on a passed ball.
Emilee Rodenbaugh led the second inning by reaching on an error. Victoria Shaw put down a sacrifice bunt to advance Rodenbaugh to second. Alison Mudd then drew a walk and Danielle Baumgartner hit a single to score Rodenbaugh. One more run was added for the Lady Bulldogs in the second inning.
Abby Dick hit a single to start the third inning. Haley Test drew a walk, followed by a single from Madison White to load the bases. Rodenbaugh hit into a fielder's choice with Dick called out at home. Shaw drew a walk to score Test. Mudd hit a single to score White and Baumgartner hit into a fielder's choice with everyone safe and Rodenbaugh scoring. Three runs were scored in the third inning.
The Mexico bats were quiet in the fourth, but came alive again in the fifth when the Lady Bulldogs added four more runs. Starting off the fifth Mudd drew a one-out walk followed by a single from Baumgartner. Costley also hit a single. Anne Baker hit into a fielder's choice with Baumgartner out at third while Mudd scored on the play. Dick then hit a single to load the bases. Test hit a double to score Costley, Anne Baker and Dick.
The sixth inning also started off with a walk to Shaw, followed by a single from Mudd. Baumgartner hit a triple to score both Shaw and Mudd. Costley drew a walk and Anne Baker was hit by a pitch. Dick then hit a sacrifice fly to score Baumgartner. With Anne Baker on first and Costley on third, Anne Baker tried a delay steal and was out on the play allowing Costley to score to put the Lady Bulldogs ahead by 10 runs.
Boonville scored 1 run in the third and 2 in the fifth.
Baumgartner also continued her winning streak (6-0) recording 7 strikeouts, 1 walk, and allowing 1 hit.
"We hit the ball hard tonight and made things happen. I was proud of the team for staying focused offensively," said head coach Christina Gerber.
The Lady Bulldogs, 7-0 overall as well as conference play, are back in action today at home against Helias.
The junior varsity team also won 8-0.
Mexico scored 1 run in the first inning when Sydney Schutte scored on an error.
In the second inning Laura Fischer hit a single for an RBI, Schutte hit a single, Courtney Inlow hit a 2-run single, Paityn House hit a 2-run double, and Rachel Owings hit a 1-run single. Mexico scored a total of 7 runs in the second inning.
The JV's record is 5-1-1.

The Lady Bulldogs volleyball team won its second match Tuesday when they were hosts to the Wright City Wildcats. Mexico took control in both games winning the first game 25-18 and taking the second game with a score of 25-12.
The junior varsity also won 25-19, 25-14.
On Monday the team traveled to Centralia and came home with its first victory of the season. Coach Rachel Leu said it was a good win for them. "We had to overcome several obstacles. First we came out sluggish in our first game, giving Centralia a 10-point lead off the bat. I was proud of how we responded in the second game taking control and keeping the momentum on our side. The third game was closer and we never gave up," stated Leu. The Lady Bulldogs were down 15-20 and fought back to get the win.
Game scores for the match were 14-25 Centralia, 25-14 and 25-23 Mexico.
Mary Davis had 11 kills and Macy Carmean, had 5.
The junior varsity lost 9-25 and 22-25.
