  • Thursday was "Pink Out Scoring For a Cure," night at Gallop Field, where the Mexico softball team raised money for the J.B and Greeta B. Arthur Cancer Center at Audrain Medical Center.
The Lady Bulldogs wore pink and black uniforms for the game for cancer awareness. The uniforms may have been different but it was the same Lady Bulldogs getting the job done with a 5-1 victory over the Moberly Lady Spartans.
The first two and a half innings of the game were scoreless. The Lady Bulldogs changed that in the bottom of the third inning scoring 3 runs. It started when Alison Mudd hit a single, Brooke Costley reached on an error allowing Mudd to advance, then Anne Baker hit a single to score Mudd. Costley was able to advance to third, Abby Dick hit into an out allowing Costley to score from third. Karen Baker then hit a double to score Anne Baker.
The Lady Bulldogs were scoreless in the fourth, before they picked up two more runs in the fifth inning. Costley hit a one-out single and after stealing second, she advanced to third on a passed ball. Anne Baker drew a walk and stole second. Dick hit into a fielder's choice with everyone safe. Karen Baker came up to bat with the bases loaded and hit a single to score Costley. Haley Test hit a sacrifice fly to score Anne Baker.
Mexico's defense held Moberly to only one run which came in the fifth inning. "We played well tonight. Defensively we were solid and we put the ball in play at the right times," said MHS coach Christina Gerber.
MHS sophomore Danielle Baumgartner had another good performance on the mound with 9 strikeouts, 1 walk, 1 hit batter, and allowed 3 hits.
Mexico, 9-1 overall and 9-0 in conference will be in action this weekend in the Centralia Tournament.
In the junior varsity game, Moberly won 7-3. Mexico scored 1 run in the second inning when Victoria Shaw reached on an error that allowed her to get to third. Courtney Inlow then hit a single to score Shaw.
Mexico scored 2 more runs in the third after Sydney Schutte was hit by a pitch. Leslie Fischer reached on an error. Schutte and Fischer both advanced on a passed ball. Shaw hit into a fielder's choice with Fischer out at third. Scoring on the play was Schutte. Inlow hit a single that scored Rodenbaugh.
Moberly scored 4 runs in the first and 3 runs in the second.
Laura Fischer also had a single on the night in the first inning.
GOLF: The Brookfield Invitational is a tradition in girls golf, the Mexico team has been participating in for many years. The Lady Bulldogs placed third as a team. "This is a fun tournament for us to play in because we are playing a course that we only see once a year and playing teams that we hardly ever see during the season. It was a nice experience for us yesterday, the weather was absolutely perfect and the course was in fairly nice condition," said MHS Coach Lindsey Yancey. Layne Ray was a runner up (second place). "Layne had a very good day, she played very consistent golf," said her coach.
Page 2 of 2 - The Lady Bulldogs are gearing up for a hectic end of the regular season so this was a good tournament in which to play to start getting prepared for the remaining competitions. They have a tough tournament scheduled for Monday at Kirksville, where they will again be playing against teams they don't usually see.
    Mexico's record is 22-7.
