Softball, soccer, G7/8 football
The Mexico High School Lady Bulldogs softball team came up short, 10-9, Tuesday night against the Sturgeon Lady Bulldogs.
"We kept fighting tonight but came up short. When we play close games like this we get better," said MHS coach Christina Gerber.
The Bulldogs started off in the first inning with 2 runs. Anne Baker led Mexico with a two-out single. Abby Dick followed with another single and Karen Baker hit a double to score both Anne Baker and Dick. Anne Baker also had a hit in the third inning but did not score.
Sturgeon got on the board and took the lead in the third inning with four runs. The Sturgeon Lady Bulldogs also scored four runs in the fourth, while Mexico was scoreless in both the third and fourth innings.
Mexico answered back in the fifth inning with five runs. The inning began with a single from Haley Test, followed by a single from Alison Mudd. Danielle Baumgartner then hit a double to score Test and Mudd. Brooke Costley reached on an error and Anne Baker hit a double to score Baumgartner and Costley. Karen Baker then hit a single allowing Anne Baker to score.
In the sixth inning Test and Mudd drew walks. Costley hit a single to load the bases. Anne Baker drew a walk to score Test and Dick hit into an out but scored Mudd.
Sturgeon added two more runs in the seventh.
Karen Baker pitched the first three innings and Anne Baker came in to pitch in the top of the fourth.
Mexico, 12-3 for the season and 10-0 in conference, plays again tonight in a conference game at Kirksville.
Sturgeon also prevailed in the junior varsity game 3-2.
In the second inning, Courtney Inlow hit a single, Nicole Webber drew a walk and Rachel Owings hit a double to score Inlow.
In the fourth inning, Katelyn Smith reached on an error and Webber was hit by a pitch. Smith advanced to third on a passed ball. Webber stayed at first and on the next play was thrown out at second while stealing. On the play Smith was able to score.
Sturgeon scored one run in the third and two in the fifth.
Mexico's junior varsity record is 8-3-1.
SOCCER: The Bulldogs soccer team got back into the win column Tuesday night defeating Boonville 5-1.
Christian McKeown and Sergey Comerzan each had two goals for the Bulldogs for a 4-1 lead at the half. Sean Kelly scored early in the second half to round out the scoring. Brock Fuemmeler, Colin Cosby and Aron Manns had the assists for the Bulldogs.
"We played a lot better as a team and we have a week before our next game which will give us time to improve for the second half of the season," said MHS coach Chris Hotop.
Mexico's record is now 6-7.
The junior varsity team tied 0-0.
FOOTBALL: The Mexico eighth grade football team lost 22-0 at home Tuesday night against Kirksville.
"We played tough against a larger, very physical Kirksville squad. Mistakes kept us from getting back into the game," stated MMS Coach David Okenfuss.
The Bulldog seventh-graders got a comeback victory overcoming 3 first half turnovers to beat Kirksville 28-20. Trailing 20-8 in the second quarter, the defense lead the way to the victory.
Ben Brestal, Ty DeBurns and Juan Leal played well for the defense. Offensively, Michael White, Avion Williams, Deion Wayman, and Cameron Holman scored for Mexico. Terrese Aaron's touchdown fumble recovery in the endzone sealed the victory on the last play of the game.
The next game for the seventh grade is at Fulton on Oct. 2 The final home game for the seventh-graders is Oct. 9 against Moberly.
