Barbara Jean Dowell, 69 of Mexico, passed away Tuesday, Sept. 25, 2012 at Audrain Medical Center.
Memorial services will be held at 1 p.m. Friday at the First Presbyterian Church. The family will receive friends following the service in the First Presbyterian Church Fellowship Hall. Private inurnment will be in the First Presbyterian Church Columbarium.
Barbara was born Oct. 14, 1942 in Mexico, the daughter of Howard and Ialeene (McMurtry) Willis. On Jan. 31, 1965 in Auxvasse, she married Kenneth Dowell.
Mrs. Dowell graduated from Lindenwood University with a Bachelors Degree of Science. She had taught at the Mexico LPN School and was the Educational Director at the Fulton State Hospital. Barbara was then the Director of Nursing at East Central Missouri Mental Health Center, Audrain Medical Center and the Missouri Veterans Home, retiring in 2008.
Barbara was a member of the First Presbyterian Church and the Missouri Nursing Association. She enjoyed flower gardening, watching all sports, reading and her cats.
Survivors include her husband, Kenneth of the home; two sons, Todd Dowell of Columbia and Kevin Dowell of San Francisco, Cal.; two special grandchildren, Jadon and Ian Sheppard of Mexico; one brother, William "Bill" Willis and wife, Rachelle of Auxvasse; one uncle, Bob McMurtry and wife, Carolyn of Auxvasse; two brothers-in-law, Keith Dowell and wife, Brenda of Mexico and Dale Dowell and wife, Marcia of Mexico; and numerous nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents.
In lieu of flowers, the family strongly suggests memorials to the Barbara Dowell Nursing Scholarship, in care of Arnold Funeral Home, 425 S. Jefferson, Mexico, MO 65265.
