  • SOFTBALL: Kirksville held Mexico scoreless Thursday night in the second round of District play. The Lady Bulldogs had two hits on the night from Karen Baker and Victoria Shaw in the 6-inning 10-0 loss. Kirksville scored 6 runs in the first inning, 1 run in the 3rd inning, and 6 runs in the 7th. Danielle Baumgartner was the pitcher for the Lady Bulldogs. She recorded 6 strikeouts, 2 walks and allowed 8 hits.
Mexico's overall record is 14-6. Mexico pitchers records are Danielle Baumgartner 12-4; Karen Baker 2-1; and Anne Baker 0-1.
"Tonight was a tough way to end the season," said coach Christina Gerber. "Kirksville came out in the first inning and hit the ball hard. We were not able to battle back tonight at the plate. Overall we had a great year as we were conference champions for the second year in a row."
SOCCER: The Mexico soccer team lost to the Helias Crusaders by the score of 2-1 Thursday night. After a scoreless first half Helias scored 10 minutes into the second half and then scored again 5 minutes later. With 6 minutes left in the game Sean Kelly beat the keeper with the assist going to Christian McKeown.
"Helias is always one of the better teams we play and we couldn't generate any offense against them getting only 2 shots on goal," Coach Chris Hotop said. "We continue to improve but with 8 games left in the regular season, 6 in the conference, we need to get some wins."
Goalie Tyler Warmbrodt made 10 saves on the night. Next game is at Kirksville on Tuesday.
CROSS COUNTRY: A pleasant cool evening provided the backdrop for the Frank Lemon Invitational in Hannibal.
"The biggest news for the Mexico Middle School Bulldogs would be the first place finish by Marquis Smith in the boys race. The Hannibal course offers a challenging task due to hills, but Marquis was able to outsprint the second place runner to become meet champion. Adding consistent support and medaling as they have all season were Caleb Robertson (8) and Marcus Moore (10)," said Coach Bucky Green.
Although not medaling Tyler Brandow had his best time of the season.
On the girls side Elizabeth Finck led the Bulldogs with a 10 place followed closely by Kellee Smith who finished just one place out of the medals.
"All in all we coaches felt all our kids competed well," Green said.
