  • At the high school golf Sectional Tournament held Monday at Green Hills Golf Course in Chillicothe, Mexico High School golfers Layne Ray and Kaylee Stone, both juniors, qualified for the State Tournament. This is the first time since 2008 MHS has sent girls to the State competition.
Ray came in second overall in the individual competition, shooting 14 over par, 44 on the front nine and 42 on the back nine.
Stone, who came in seventh overall in the individual competition shot 25 over par, 52 on the front nine and 45 on the back nine.
The remaining MHS golfers and their scores included: Abigail Hoer 106, Jessica Slagle 115; and Haley Auwarter 123.
"Sending two players to represent MHS is also above the goal we set. We were hoping to send at least one player. The girls are both very excited about this chance to compete and are looking forward to the opportunity to play a beautiful and challenging course," said MHS coach Lindsey Yancey.
"I told the girls on our team that if they went to this tournament and shot at or below average for our team and individually that we had done all we could do and if we missed State we would hold our heads high and know we'd done our best. That is exactly what happened yesterday," said Yancey.
Layne Ray, Kaylee Stone and Abigail Hoer all had really great performances, especially considering all the pressure they were playing under and playing a course they had seen for the first time only the day before.
"As a whole, the team shot just one stroke over our best 18 hole score all season. To miss going to State as a team by 5 strokes was heart-breaking, and especially bitter-sweet considering how well the team actually played," said the coach. "All things considered, this team has surpassed my expectations of them this season and I am very much looking forward to the great things they are going to do next year," added Yancey.
The top two lowest scoring teams qualify for the State Tournament. Trenton finished in first place, Moberly second, with Mexico coming in at third. The State competition will begin Monday in New Bloomfield.
Mexico's last team competition is the Conference Tournament this Thursday at Moberly.
