  • Monday was a really interesting race for the Mexico cross country team. Running on a zig-zag course near the Centralia ball fields, the DXC team was anchored by the junior varsity. The regular Mexico varsity team was held out for training purposes, giving them a unique opportunity to enter a couple seniors and other members of the JV team that are strong athletes but don't usually get to run varsity. "Bumping up an entire JV linueup was pretty exciting for these kids," said MHS coach John Wilbers.
The girls team was led some of the time by freshman Mia Case, but she was edged out by junior (and also first year runner) Dyneshia Shivers. On the boys side, the most interesting thing was that this group of JV runners entered in the varsity race still got fourth place overall out of 10 varsity teams. Spencer Freeman, Dalton Slay, and Logan Anselmi were all very close to medaling (top 15), and probably all three set a personal record. Ultimately only Spencer – who has been battling knee injuries all season – ran a great race and was the only varsity guy to pick up a medal. The only guys left to run in the junior varsity race freshman and sophomores who nearly all medaled, led off by Zach George and Dakota McGrath who both took turns leading the race.

Saturday's cross country meet at Helias was the first really cold-weather race of year for the Mexico Bulldogs, heightened by the wind coming off the lake at Binder Park. Despite a few minor injuries holding back the team from maximum potential, they were "in it to win it" and put forth great effort.
On the girls side sophomore and captain Maddie Prince medaled in this competitive meet against runners from a few of the best teams in the state including Hickman, Helias, and Jefferson City Jays.
Page 2 of 2 - "If she was intimidated at all, she didn't show it, earning a personal record of 21:54, stated MHS coach John Wilbers. "If we can bring everyone together healthy at the same time we should be a top three team at both conference and district," added Wilbers.
On the boys side, they showed they could grind it out with the best of them, running amongst the field of strong competitors from those same top state teams. "Although not winning first, they ran awesomely and placed only behind state teams Jefferson Jays, Hickman, and 2A Champions Fatima High. However, these boys beat 10 other teams in their efforts ... including perennial powerhouse Helias. After winning just two days earlier on the excessively hilly Hannibal course, these guys really showed they have the stuff to be a top team when it comes to the conference and district meets coming up. We entered this race as preparation for those key competitions, hoping that this would be even more difficult. I think DXC is positioned very strongly on both the boys and girls side for the final part of the season," said Wilbers.
