SOCCER: The Mexico High School soccer team suffered a disappointing loss at Kirksville Tuesday. The score was tied at one after two overtime periods. Kirksville won the match in penalty kicks 6-5.
"We continue to play well enough to win but offensively we struggle to finish our chances on goal," stated MHS coach Chris Hotop.
The Bulldogs play again Thursday at home against Hannibal Pirates. Varsity will play first at 5 p.m. with the junior varsity game after the varsity.
FOOTBALL: On Tuesday, the Bulldog seventh grade football team completed an undefeated season with a win over Moberly by a score of 42-6. Moberly opened the game by scoring the first touchdown, but Mexico's defense did not allow any further points by the visitors. Tyler Wine, Ben Brestal, Kellen Ekern, Juan Leal and Avion Williams played well for the defense. Antwan Davis scored a touchdown on an interception return. Scoring for the offense was Michael White, Deion Wayman, and Cameron Holman.
The seventh-graders finished their seaon with a record of 7-0.
The Mexico Middle School eighth grade football team lost its last game of the season 38-8 to Moberly Tuesday at home. The score at half time was 14-8. "We played well the first half but had way too many miscues and breakdowns in our pass coverage in the third and fourth quarters," stated MMS coach David Okenfuss.
Okenfuss added that the team showed improvement throughout the season and it was really nice to get that first win. "If the team sticks together and commits to the off-season program, they will continue to improve and will see success in high school," he added.
