The Centralia Lady Panthers softball team has advanced to the State quarterfinal after a shutout victory Wednesday at home against the Winfield Lady Warriors with a final score of 1-0.
"This was a game of mental toughness. We scored in the third inning and then not again. Both pitchers did an outstanding job," stated CHS coach Jill Angell.
Baylee Douglass (14-1) pitched all seven innings for the Lady Panthers, allowing 1 hit, no runs, 2 walks and struck out 13. The losing pitcher was M. Hoelting who pitched 7 innings, allowed 5 hits, 1 run, 1 walk and struck out 8. Neither team had any errors.
"We struggled to put any hits together. After we scored in the third, we just had to hold the lead. Our kids played superb defense," said Angell.
Offensively for Centralia, Sydney Creel was 2-3, Meredith VanMaanen was 1-3 with a single in the third and scored the only run, and Haley Schmersahl was 1-3 with 1 RBI, scoring VanMaanen.
The Lady Panthers will host St. Dominic at 1:30 p.m. Friday in the quarterfinal game.
