  • Tuesday was the last regular season meet for Mexico Bulldogs cross country teams. For the junior varsity members this was the end of the season. The varsity members will compete on Oct. 27 in district competition in Warrenton. State competition will follow on Nov. 3 in Jefferson City.
After coming off a conference championship over the weekend, the Bulldogs ran without several regular varsity members who are recovering from some routine sickness and light injury.
"I wasn't sure what this meet would look like for us lacking these key runners. On the boys side, I was impressed to find out that the remaining team (including the additional runners brought up from JV) not only stepped up again to the challenge, but pulled in second place," stated MHS coach John Wilbers. Leading this pack was Malik Holman, Alex Shaw, Jordan Jones, and Raven Twenter. "Even after racing just Saturday, these guys still found the energy to surpass many runners from the other teams that had beaten them individually before ... impressive," said Wilbers.
On the girls side, the lead was anchored by sophomore captain Maddie Prince, who steadily worked her way up the field for a medal-winning ninth place. Despite reporting strain from the heat, Prince looked strong.
"When many other runners started to fall back or struggle from the strain of the race, Prince actually looked renewed and still moving up. This shows not only the strength of the conditioning these kids have been willing to do this year, but how concentrated and dedicated runners like Maddie are on the Mexico cross country team," said Wilbers. Even though the girls varsity and boys varsity was not at full strength, Mexico still showed up and was noticed at this tough meet. The results continue to provide positive outlook for the upcoming competition at districts. In Tuesday's race the boys varsity again beat St. Dominic, the top ranked team in the district.
