The Moberly Spartans kept the Mexico Bulldogs scoreless until the fourth quarter of Friday night's football game held at Hawthorne Heights. Senior Alex Hall scored the only Bulldog touchdown with a 55-yard TD run in the fourth quarter. Hall also ran a three-yard, two-point conversion.
The Spartans scored 2 TDs in the first quarter, kicked a field goal in the second; and scored two more TDs in the third quarter. The final score was 31-8.
"Defensively we played pretty well. We held them to 111 Rushing yards," said MHS coach Ty Harrison. On the offensive side the Bulldogs had blocking problems.
"Offensively we had a lot of trouble blocking them which hurt our running game," said the MHS coach.
Injuries also plagued the Bulldogs. "Our starting LG (Michael Newman) did not play due to injury and we played some freshmen on the line. That is tough when you are playing against juniors and seniors. I think our kids played hard through and I am proud of them," said Harrison.
Also, recovering from injuries are running back and linebacker Jamel Taylor and John Lummis, offensive line and defensive line.
On senior night, Hall had eight carries with 55 yards, one TD and one two-point conversion. Matt Ridgway threw for 142 yards. Tyler Bracht had seven receptions for 53 yards while Skylar Harrington had seven receptions for 49 yards.
The Bulldogs, 1-8 overall, begin district play at 7 p.m. Friday at Hannibal.
