  • Mexico golfers compete in first Tri-County Cup matches

  • Moberly hosted, Fulton will host in 2013, Mexico in 2014

  • A group of Mexico golfers traveled to Moberly this past weekend to compete in the first ever Tri-County Cup matches and did well.
    On Saturday morning the Mexico team was victorious by two points and won the Tri-County Skills challenge. Winning the skills challenge guaranteed the team first place in the cup matches in the event there was a tie.
    At the end of the match Mexico finished just .5 points behind host Moberly with a grand total of 26.5, Moberly had 27 and Fulton finished with 18.5.
    "All in all, every Mexico player had a great time and really enjoyed representing their home town and or home course," said team captain John Knipfel. He said the golfers fought hard all weekend and never gave up. "As a golf coach and now cup captain, you learn quickly that it hurts to lose," said Knipfel. He said the Mexico team showed great sportsmanship. "Our guys shook every hand of the Moberly team and left knowing that we represented Mexico with class, honor and dignity and for that I am truly proud of them.
    Players who had no losses on their scorecards this weekend were Barrett Hutchinson, Damon Dollens and Matt Dallmeyer. Mike Hibbs had the most wins with five total.
    In the first round Saturday, team Mexico got off to a slow start in the two-man scramble winning only five points. Fulton ended the day with 4.5 and Moberly led the way with 8.5.
    The first round Sunday was the two-man best ball teams. This was Mexico's chance to rally back and did so winning 8.5 points, Moberly won 5 and Fulton won 4.5. This put the overall matches at 13.5 Mexico, 13.5 Moberly and 9 for Fulton.
    The final round on Sunday was made up of singles matches – individual play. Mexico had 12 players in the field and "played extremely well like in the morning matches," said Knipfel. Mexico came in with 13 points, Moberly 13.5 and Fulton 9.5.
    It was decided at the end of the awards ceremony by a coin flip that Fulton will host next year's cup. Mexico will host it in 2014. Any interested golfer who would like to try out for next year's team and are members of either Mexico County Club, Arthur Hills Golf Course or live within 10 miles of Mexico, should watch for qualifier dates in 2013. Golfers will have a chance to earn a spot on the team through two separate 18-hole qualifying events.
