In district play at Hannibal Friday night
The Mexico Bulldogs football team will enter district play Friday at Hannibal.
Ty Harrison's young team will face an experienced Hannibal Pirates team who are the first seed in district competition.
Earlier this year the Bulldogs were hosts to the Pirates and lost 41-14. Both teams are coming off losses from last week. Mexico lost to Moberly and Hannibal lost its first game of the season at the hands of the Helias Crusaders.
The Pirates are a very solid team in all phases and the Bulldogs will have a tough task in stopping them. During practice this week, the Bulldogs have been working on stopping Hannibal's option game as well as their running game. In addition, the Bulldogs will need to block their big and physical defensive line. The Bulldogs have also been working on moving their feet when they are blocking. They have been running a lot of options in team defense.
After watching Saturday's film, Harrison said his team will need to move the ball better on the ground. "We had a hard time moving the ball with running plays. Most of the offense had to come from the passing game," said the MHS coach.
As for defense, Harrison saw improvement with his team against Moberly. "Defensively we did a decent job and tackling was much better."
The MHS coach said the Bulldogs need to score early which will be a huge confidence booster. "We need to keep them off balance by being able to run the ball some so they can't sit on our passing game. Defensively we want to take away their best run plays and make them do something they are not as comfortable doing."
Michael Newman and John Lummis will not play in Friday's game due to injuries, and Jamel Taylor is questionable.
