On Monday, deputies from the Audrain County Sheriff's office began investigating a report that a 13-year-old male juvenile was in possession of a loaded gun in a trailer court in Audrain County. During the investigation, it was learned the juvenile was at the Mexico Middle School for an after school activity and was possibly still in possession of the gun.
ACSO then coordinated with the Mexico Public Safety Department, and the juvenile was located at MMS. Officers also located the gun, which the juvenile had hidden on school property, outside of the building, before he went inside. According to a press release from MPSD there was no indication the juvenile planned to use the gun at the school, but instead had attempted to hide it before entering.
The juvenile was transferred to a detention center by the 12th Circuit Court Juvenile Division.
MPSD, ACSO, and the Mexico Public Schools are continuing to investigate the issue to ensure the students and schools are safe.
Mexico Schools Superintendent Kevin Freeman would like to reiterate there were never any threats made to do harm. Students and staff members are safe and school is in session. The school district is very appreciative of both the Sheriff's Office and Public Safety in their response to the situation. Additionally, those who reported this to the Sheriff are to be commended for taking care of the young man in question, the school and the community.
