"That advertising pays was further attested Saturday morning when a large crowd of women collected in front of Andrews and Burton's store on the south side of the square to receive a handsome dress pattern. Andrews & Burton carried an extensive display advertisement in the local papers this week, announcing their opening which took place at 9 o'clock on Saturday morning. Embodied in their advertisement was the announcement that this firm would give absolutely free to the first ten ladies entering their store each a beautiful dress pattern. At 7 a.m. Saturday, several women had taken their station at the door to be sure to be one of the ten."

"The Audrain County Court and Mexico Special Road District commissioners this morning examined the debris of a 70-foot bridge west of Mexico which collapsed under a boom truck owned by the construction firm laying pipeline for Panhandle Eastern Pipeline Co. County Engineer John Jesse estimated that it would cost $10,000 to replace the bridge. The bridge crossed Davis Branch on the road that runs from Route FF (Old Columbia Road) across from the E.J. Hoffman place, north and west to Route WW past Arthur Hills Golf Course. County court members said it looked as if the truck got well onto the bridge and hit an overhead beam supporting the structure, causing it to collapse."

"At Wednesday night's meeting, the Community R-6 Board of Education discussed the feasibility of placing a tax levy increase on the April 1988 election ballot in an effort to recoup $40,000 in lost revenue caused by a recent agricultural land devaluation. Superintendent of Schools Ted Spessard said board members had been canvassing school district patrons as to whether a levy increase proposal would be well received. He said public opinion seems to be divided on the issue. A decision must be made during the December board meeting in order to meet state filing requirements, Spessard said."
