  • Audrain County Recorder of Deeds office is offering a free service, optional to local patrons, that protects them against property fraud.
According to the Federal Bureau of Investigation, property and mortgage fraud is the fastest growing white-collar crime that can be as simple as someone recording a fraudulent document in the county land records offices – making it look like they now own your home or property.
"I feel that this service is the greatest protection you can have against this type of crime," said Audrain County Recorder Janis Deimeke.
If patrons sign up now, Deimeke said there are people in her office who can assist patrons with their name or business and contact them either by email or phone to let them know there has been activity concerning their business or property. If the citizen is not aware of it, then the recorder of deeds will be able to assist them concerning the problem.
The recorder of deeds office has teamed up to create a notification service called property fraud alert that Deimeke says is "easy to do, and the best thing is that it is free."
To subscribe free of charge visit the website www.propertyfraudalert.com or call the Property Fraud Alert hotline at 1-800-728-3858. For further details, contact the county recorder's office at (573) 473-5830.
