Melvin Lee "Bob" Stephenson, 89, of Mexico, Missouri passed away Monday, Nov. 26, 2012 at Audrain Medical Center. He was born Dec. 21, 1922 to Archie Merle Stephenson and Eva Millicent (Yearsley) Stephenson in Phelps, Nebraska.
Bob was an Army Veteran of WWII. He served from 1943 to 1945. In September 1949 he married Joyce Eileen Walker, moved to Mexico, MO and within days took over the ownership of the Hoxsey Hotel. They also owned and operated the Stephenson Best Western for 25 years.
Bob truly loved his children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He was in constant contact with each one of them. One of his greatest passions was flying after having obtained his private pilot license when he was only 16 years old. Bob also enjoyed woodworking, lawn tractors and most importantly having his family be at his home.
Bob was preceded in death by his brother James G. Stephenson and sister Betty Palmtag Harms. His survivors include his wife Joyce of 63 years, his six children: Robert Stephenson (Susan), Las Vegas; Bill Stephenson, Mexico; Joy Janis (David), Lindsborg, KS; Tracy Wilmshorst (David), Liberty, MO; Mark Stephenson (Holly), League City, TX and Brian Stephenson (Shawna), Mexico, MO along with 18 grandchildren and 21 great-grand children.
Visitation will be held Thursday, Nov. 29th from 1 p.m. until time of services at 3 p.m. at Arnold Funeral Home. Pastor Robert H. Marty and Pastor Karen Taylor will be officiating. Interment with full military honors will follow at East Lawn Memorial Park.
