Progress continues on construction

The 36,000 square feet of new facility and 8,000 square feet of renovated space to meet the health and wellness needs of the Mexico area community is near completion at the Mexico Area YMCA, with an estimated opening date of late spring 2013, officials there said.
As of April this year, a total of $3,877,433 had been collected in the Community Capital Campaign, with a goal of $4.1 million. Since then, more than $4 million has been raised. The exterior walls of the construction are in place and the focus now centers on the completion of the roof and individual program rooms.
The proposed expansion, Y officials say, will allow the YMCA to add several new programs, including:
• Competitive basketball leagues for youth and adults
• Recreational basketball focused on skills and fitness
• Volleyball for youth and adults
• Indoor soccer
• Indoor batting and throwing space for baseball
• Basketball and volleyball tournaments
• Walking and running clubs
• Expanded fitness class offerings
• Additional youth wellness programs
• Gymnastics programs
• Competitive gymnastics teams
"We are really, really excited," said YMCA Executive Director Sherry Medley. With the capital campaign completed, Medley said their efforts are now focusing on the completion of the project. "We know now we are going to finish, and we're tweaking things, which are adding more to the cost. So, we plan to continue fundraising until we meet our goal."
In four years, the YMCA committee, Medley said, has raised more than $4 million. "So, we think we have enough to reach our goal, mainly because we have dedicated people that know how to think outside the box and help put us on the map."
In addition to the new programs, Medley said the new facility will also feature two new gyms, two full-size basketball courts, an elevated walking track, and senior, junior and family programs.
"We're calling it the "Y" Cafe, hoping it will help jazz things up a bit. We're also getting a new sports room, new restrooms, child-like rooms and great storage space."
The Professional Contractors and Engineers company out of Columbia won the bid and has already completed 22,000 square feet of the new building, which is more than half of the planned size.
"So, I'd say, we're doing pretty good," Medley said. "We will be adding new staff, part time and full-time workers. A house and grounds person has already been hired, and from the contractor's side of things, the roof could be finished as early as this week, allowing the workers to start the inside work.
"And, when we get through the holidays, we'll have four months left until opening."
