With 10 lettermen, and three state qualifiers returning to the Mexico High School wrestling team this season, first year coach Gayle Adams is looking to have a successful year.
Adams' expectations for the year is to improve every day, be in the top two as a team in conference and in the top five as a team in the state tournament. Leading the way will be Jake Vitale a three-time state qualifier and three-time state award winner. He took fifth as a freshman, second as a sophomore and fifth as a junior. Also leading the way will be Hunter Smith and Jayde Moran, both state qualifiers last year. But Adams believes every wrestler will contribute to the team.
"I feel that every wrestler will make an impact this year. I had a few wrestlers that lost on the bubble at Districts last year to qualify for state and they have worked hard this off season," stated the MHS coach.
According to their coach, the MHS matmen have depth, knowledge of wrestling and will provide hard nose in "your face" wrestling.
The roster for this year's team includes: Jadin Taylor, 113, sophomore; Hunter Smith, 120, sophomore; Jordan Jones, 126, freshman, Scott Speaks, 132, freshman; 138 Jayde Moran, sophomore or J.W. Turner, freshman; Jake Vitale, 145, senior; Sam Fayad, 152, junior; Dalton Wilson, 160, senior; Anthony Brower, 170, junior; Payton Turner, 182, junior; Thorne Cheney, 195, junior; John Lummis, 220, Zach Manns, HWT, sophomore. Jordan Jones and Scott Speaks will both wrestle 126 and 132.
The MHS wrestlers will begin their season Saturday in the Grain Valley Tournment.
