There will be a new Moser's Supermarket built in northwest Mexico, scheduled to open in late 2013 or early 2014. Roger Moser, CEO of Moser's Supermarkets, announced plans for a 30,000 square foot store to be built on West Monroe Street.
The store will be built on the current site of the Gibbons Basement Systems and Gilmore Implements buildings. The demolition of the existing buildings will begin in January, and following work on the site, construction of the actual building will begin in the spring.
Moser said he had been considering expansion to Mexico for some time.
"I've been following what is going on in Mexico," he said. "After the brick plants closed, the town didn't lay down and die. City officials have been actively recruiting businesses."
The new store will join existing stores in Fulton, Holts Summit, Jefferson City, Warrenton, Ashland, and two stores in Columbia. The first store opened in 1982.
All the stores have a full-service meat counter, which is a Moser Supermarket hallmark.
"Our slogan is 'our meat is a cut above the rest,' and we specialize in stores which are clean, competitive and friendly," Moser said.
Along with the meat, which is not shipped in but is cut in-store, Moser's also will have a deli, with a bakery, and a large fresh produce department.
The store will employ 30 full-time and 20 part-time employees, according to Moser. Most of the employees will be hired locally.
For Moser, opening a store in this area is a homecoming of sorts.
"My grandfather, my mother's dad, had a grocery store in Laddonia from 1920-1950, and my father owned a Plymouth Chrysler dealership (Hunt and Moser) here in Mexico in the 1950s and 1960s," he said. "Ironically, the dealership was on the same property we are going to develop there on West Monroe Street. When I worked there for my dad when I was a kid, little did I realize I would return to that property."
The company also purchased some additional land on the site, which will allow room for an extra 8,000 square feet of retail space.
