Boys win Montgomery County Basketball Tourney

It was a three-peat for the Mexico Bulldogs boys basketball team in the Montgomery County Tournament Saturday night when they defeated Fulton 71-27 in the championship game. Leading the way for Mexico was Cole Jaramillo with 27 points and 9 3-point baskets; Jake Willer scored 12 points for the Bulldogs.
On Sunday Mexico beat Springfield Glendale in the Norm Stewart Classic at Columbia. The final score was 59-41. Mexico had three players in double-figures. Jake Willer posted 27 points, Jaramillo, Jaeon Nunnelly each scored 10 points for the Bulldogs.
The Bulldogs return to action Tuesday in a conference game at Marshall.
MEXICO GIRLS: The Lady Bulldogs took third place in the Montgomery County Tournament Friday with a 45-31 final against the Fulton Hornets.
Two MHS players were in double figures: Brooke Costley had 14 points, 5 assists and 3 rebounds; Kelli Ingrum scored 10 points, 2 steals and 5 rebounds. Anne Baker scored 8 points and led the team with 6 rebounds. Alison Mudd scored 5 points; and Remington Greenwell scored 4.
"The girls played well, we finally got some outside shots to fall for us. We had a good third quarter to open the game up, outscoring them 18-4," stated MHS coach Ed Costley.
The Lady Bulldogs hit three 3-point baskets in the third with Alison Mudd starting off with a 3-pointer and Costley hitting a 3-pointer on the next possession.
"Kelli Ingrum played a solid game on both ends of the floor scoring 10 points with 5 rebounds," said her coach. "Overall I was pleased how we bounced back and the progression in our girls is showing from quarter to quarter," added Costley.
Fulton had one player with 10 points.

Fulton: 4, 9, 4, 14.
The Lady Bulldogs return to action tonight in a conference game at Marshall.
Mexico freshmen Bulldogs won the consolation game in their own tournament Saturday beating Moberly 52-23. Fulton took home the trophy with a 56-47 decision over Helias. Oakland took third place with a 48-44 victory over West Junior. Hannibal took the seventh-place game 43 to 12 against North Callaway.
WRESTLING: The Mexico Bulldog wrestling team opened its season at the Grain Valley tournament. As a team Mexico took second place with 225 points behind Omaha Burke, Neb. with 344 points.
Five MHS wrestlers advanced to the finals with senior Jake Vitale going 5-0 and taking first place at 152 pounds. Four Bulldogs went 4-1 losing in the final match and each taking second place. They include: Hunter Smith, 120 pounds; Jordan Jones, 126; Payton Turner, 182 pounds, and Thorne Cheney, 195 pounds. Rounding out Mexico individual scores were: Dalton Wilson, 170 pounds, third place; Zach Mann, 285 pounds, fourth place; Jadin Taylor, 113, J.W. Turner, 138 pounds, Sam Fayad, 160, John Lummis, 220 pounds, all taking fifth place; Scott Speaks, 132 pounds, seventh place; and Ethan Musgrove, 145 pounds, eight place.
"Overall it was a great day of wrestling for Mexico. The guys competed tough but we still need to improve on our feet and on bottom. We are making great strides for February for the state tournament," stated MHS coach Gayle Adams.
The remaining team scores include: Fort Osage, third, 173 points; Center (Kansas City), fourth, 153 points; Grain Valley, fifth, 131 points; Lafayette (St. Joseph) sixth, 127 points; Raytown, seventh, 121, points; Savannah, eighth, 120 points; and Holden, ninth with 70 points.
The Bulldogs return to action Wednesday in a match against Marshall and Sedalia in Marshall.
The junior varsity team was also in action at Blue Springs. Scores for this match were not tallied. However, MHS had four champions, Spencer Freeman, 126 pounds, Peyton Samuelson, 138; Anthony Brower, 182; and Allek Adams, 195.
