AUXVASSE – The Callaway County Sheriff's Office is investigating an early morning shooting incident that occurred in Auxvasse and left one person dead.
According to CCS reports, deputies and Missouri State Highway Patrol troopers responded to a shooting on South Main Street at approximately 12:50 a.m. today. The victim, pronounced dead at the scene, has been identified as Benjamin T. Harris, 28, of Auxvasse.
The report states that deputies and troopers interviewed witnesses and the shooter. Crane said he's not releasing the name of the shooter at this point while the investigation continues.
Callaway County Sheriff Dennis Crane told The Ledger that the incident began as a verbal dispute at a local bar over a game of pool. Harris later reportedly went to the shooter's home and another confrontation took place, ending with Harris being shot.
Crane said the shooter has not been charged and is cooperating with the investigation. An official autopsy is being performed today.
The investigation is ongoing. Crane said the department and prosecutor's office are working together to determine whether or not the shooter's actions can be deemed justifiable self-defense.
