CENTRALIA TOURNAMENT: Southern Boone and Salisbury advance to the championship game Saturday in the Centralia basketball tournament after their victories Thursday night. Salisbury beat Hallsville 66-60 with Austin Wyatt scoring 30 points for Salisbury, followed by Austin Francis with 14. For Hallsville, Brendan Beatty scored 15 points and Skylar Creed scored 14.
Southern Boone advanced after a 3-point advantage over Sturgeon with the final score 62-59. Nick Carlos scored 28 points for Southern Boone. Sturgeon had two players in double figures: Spencer Kelly, 22 and Brayden Kelly, 15.
The championship game begins at 8 p.m.
Boonville beat Macon 44-39 to advance. Leading the way for Boonville was Damario Walker with 15 points, followed by Guage Sharp with 10. For Macon, Trey Kother scored 11 points.
North Callaway was victorious over Centralia 64-50. Each team had players in double figures. For North Callaway, Vance Allen scored 19, Justin Murphy scored 16 and Jacob Haubner scored 12. Haubner and Zac Eads each had 8 rebounds
"This was a good win. The boys played hard even players off the bench did a good job and it is good to be in a trophy game," said North Callaway Coach Tim Turlington.
A.J. Jerichow was the top scorer for Centralia with 14 points and Logan Armontrout added 10P.
North Callaway and Boonville will play in the consolation game at 5 p.m. Saturday, and Sturgeon and Hallsville will play for third place at 6:30 p.m.
MMS EIGHTH GRADE BOYS BASKETBALL: The eighth grade basketball Bulldogs lost 27-22 Thursday night against Fulton.
"After a rough first quarter that saw us get down 12-0 we fought hard to get back in the game and give ourselves a chance at the end," said MHS coach Kyle Louder.
Miguel Vega led the Bulldogs with 9 points, followed by Clay Jeffrey with 8, Isaac Troy, 3, and Chris Campbell, 2.
The Bulldogs, 0-6, travel to Bowling Green on Monday, followed by home games against Marshall and Troy, Tuesday and Thursday.
MMS EIGHTH GRADE BASKETBALL GIRLS: Mexico played well but was hurt by a scoreless fourth quarter against Fulton with the results leading to a 36-15 Lady Bulldog loss.
"We played hard and stayed with them for a while but went scoreless in the fourth quarter and also gave up some easy points towards the end," said MMS coach Cindy Allison.
Leaders for Mexico were: McKenzie Resa 3P, Brooke Ransom 3P, Kronesha Belcher 2P/6R, Kayla Scobee 2P/5R, Sydny Hull and Taylor Brown 2P, Anna Proctor 1P.
Mexico, 1-4, plays at home Monday against Bowling Green at approximately 6:15.
MMS SEVENTH GRADE: The Bulldogs took to the road Thursday evening and came out on top with a 42-29 victory in a heated rivalry game against the Fulton Hornets.
Page 2 of 2 - After taking a 10-2 lead in the first quarter, the Bulldogs went into half tied 19-19, but managed to pull ahead in the third, 32-23. Avion Williams led all scorers with 15P/6S, while Cameron Holman 14P and Michael White 8P chipped in to help the cause. Other scores were Deion Wayman 3P and Cameron Baumgartner 2P.
"We had to make some adjustments at halftime and the team did a great job of coming out and executing the game plan. Our defense continued to put pressure on the ball, and these boys did a great job of responding to some adversity tonight," Coach Brandon Schafer stated.
The Bulldogs play again on Monday in Bowling Green.
