The Lady Bulldogs couldn't get into a flow on offense along with a combination of a lot of whistles and Eldon's defense extending led to a 62-56 loss against the Lady Mustangs in Mexico's home opener.
"We were able to get the tempo to our liking in the third quarter putting up 19 points," said MHS coach Ed Costley. Mexico was up 47-44 going into the fourth quarter.
"Down the stretch we struggled to keep them off the offensive boards. Allowing them 29 free throw attempts on the game. We have to continue to improve our floor balance and getting more of an inside-out attacking on offense," added the MHS coach.
With five minutes left in the game, the score was even at 51, Eldon received a charging foul at 4:36 sending Anne Baker to the line giving Mexico a 52-51 lead after she hit one of two free throws. The score went back and fourth and with 1:15 left Kelli Ingrum scored bringing the Lady Bulldogs within one.
Brooke Costley led the Lady Bulldogs with 21 points, including four 3-point baskets. She also had 3 assists, 4 rebounds and 2 steals. Anne Baker scored 10 with 4 assists, and 7 rebounds. Remi Greenwell added eight points with one 3-pointer, 2 assists, four rebounds and 1 steal. Kelli Ingrum had 6 points, 2 assists and 6 rebounds.
Eldon's Sara Rhine scored 31 points with 1 assist, 12 rebounds and 2 steals.
The Lady Bulldogs play again Monday when they host the Kirksville Lady Bulldogs.
