"Postmaster E.S. Wilson has just received a letter from the Post Office Department, stating that the Mexico Post office has been apportioned $50 for the hiring of vehicles to handle the parcel post business which opens Jan. 1. The letter states that he should make only temporary contracts and for him to use his own judgment as to the type of vehicle to be used. Mr. Wilson is undecided as to what he will use, owing to the smallness of the appropriation."

"Last night was the coldest of the season in Mexico, and the weatherman says there will be quite a siege of cold. The official low reading in Mexico was 12 degrees and lows tonight are expected to be from 8 to 12 in the area, warming to 20 to 25 tomorrow. A disagreeable weekend of bitting, roaring winds brough in the wave of arctic air. For the week, the weatherman says temperatures will average from 8 to12 degrees below normal, the Associated Press reported. Beyond occasional snow flurries no precipitation is expected."

"A Vandalia woman has won $21,000 in the Missouri Lottery's 7-22-21 instant game. Delores Schamma, 56, purchased her lucky ticket Sunday at Abel's Quick Shop in Vandalia, a lottery spokesman said Monday. Mrs. Schamma told lottery officials that she felt lucky, so she stopped and bought two tickets on a whim. One was a $2 winner; the other was worth $21,000."

"Mexico native Chad Shoemaker was recently chosen to fill the shoes of Parks and Recreation Director, a position that had been vacant since September. Shoemaker will begin the full-time paid City position on Dec. 16. As part of the City's reorganization plan approved Monday night by the City Council, the Parks and Rec Supervisor position has been eliminated and Shoemaker will fulfill the duties of both positions. Shoemaker, 38, is a former Park Board member and a University of Missouri-Columbia graduate with a degree in Forestry. He was most recently an employee at Nexans in Mexico. He also volunteers for the local YMCA. Shoemaker replaces former Director Todd Geeson, who left the position on Sept. 20, and former Supervisor Doug Thompson who left for Blue Springs in July."
