After losing Monday night against Kirksville, the Mexico Lady Bulldogs basketball team bounced back with a commanding 54-37 win over conference rival Hannibal Lady Pirates Thursday night at home.
MHS coach Ed Costley said it was nice to get back on the winning track going into the break. "The girls seemed to be more relaxed tonight than our last two home nights," stated Costley. He did make a change in the rotation, which made the Lady Dawgs more of an outside shooting threat. Karen Baker played well and Kelli Ingrum both had solid performances, said their coach.
Mexico ended the second quarter on a 5-0 run and outscored the Lady Pirates to start the third 6-2.
"As a team we need to learn how strong finishes and starts in quarters are what put you in position to win most games," said Mexico's coach.
In the first half the Lady Bulldogs was 33 percent from the field and then in the second half took command and was 70 percent from the field. They shot 50 percent at the free throw line in both the first and second half of the game.
Senior Brooke Costley led all scorers with 15 points including two 3-pointers. She also had 5 assists, 7 rebounds and 4 steals. Sophomore Karen Baker added 12P, including two 3-point baskets, 1 assist, 1 rebound and 2 steals. Kelli Ingrum contributed 8P with 1 assist, 6 rebounds and 1 steal. Anne Baker led the team in rebounds with 8. She also scored 6P and had 2 steals.
