Larry Van Fetterhoff, "THE WAL-MART GREETER", 69 of Mexico, passed away at 2:13 a.m. Monday, Dec. 24, 2012 at Audrain Medical Center.
A funeral service celebrating the life of Larry Van Fetterhoff will be at 1 p.m. Friday at the First Presbyterian Church with Rev. Terry Kukuk, Rev. Art Menard and Rev. Rod Davis officiating. Burial will be in East Lawn Memorial Park. A visitation will be Thursday from 5-8 p.m. at Arnold Funeral Home.
Larry was born to Claude C. and Nellie Emma Mae (Bobbitt) Fetterhoff on March 16, 1943 at his parent's home in Mexico. He first married Virginia K. (Schanbacher) Northcutt. They had two children together, Jeff and Jennifer. Larry then married Jody (Cooper) Fritschie on January 31, 1988. She survives.
He graduated from Mexico High School in 1961. Larry was a co-captain of the MHS basketball team his Junior and Senior years of high school. After serving in the Army National Guard, he graduated from the Commonwealth College of Sciences in Houston, Texas, achieving "The Dean's Award".
Mr. Fetterhoff lived in Houston, Texas, Excelsior Springs, Missouri and then Mexico. He worked as a funeral director and embalmer for Arnold Funeral Home for almost 30 years, retiring Dec. 31, 2005. In 2009, Larry greeted the Mexico community at Wal-mart. He was always telling jokes and showing off his "Pride" and "Joy".
Larry attended the First Church of the Nazarene and the First Presbyterian Church. He had been a member of the Masonic Lodge, Mexico Elks, Mexico Lions Club and the Excelsior Springs Rotary Club, having served as President from 1975-1976. Larry received an award for Outstanding Community Service as a Director of Excelsior Springs Chamber of Commerce in 1978.
Mr. Fetterhoff loved any sport, especially the Mexico Bulldogs , Mizzou football and basketball and the St. Louis Cardinals baseball. He had played golf and enjoyed playing dominos at Dean's Fried Chicken.
Survivors include his wife, Jody of the home; one son, Jeff (wife Amy) Fetterhoff of Lake St. Louis; one daughter, Jennifer (husband Jon) Mortimore of Lake St. Louis; two step-daughters, Kristen Fritschie (husband Mike Painter) of Hallsville and Kari Fritschie(Bill Fort) of Martinsburg; six grandchildren, Sydney Lynn Fetterhoff, Christopher Van Mortimore, Carter Rehm Fetterhoff, Jeffrey Van Fetterhoff, Samuel Olney Mortimore and Deacon Chase Painter; his twin brother, Garry Dan (wife Esther) Fetterhoff of Columbia; two sisters, Dorothy A. (husband Henry Louis) Davis of Mexico and Martha L. Davis of Mexico; and one sister-in-law, Lena Fetterhoff Holland of Fulton.
Larry was preceded in death by his parents; one brother, Jay Curtis Fetterhoff; one sister, Betty Bailey Myers; and two brothers-in-law, Charles I. Davis and Orvin Myers.
Memorial donations may be made to the First Church of the Nazarene or the First Presbyterian Church. All may be sent in care of Arnold Funeral Home, 425 S. Jefferson, Mexico, MO 65265.
