William "Francis" Walker, 93, of Mexico, died at 11:58 a.m., Sunday, December 30, 2012 at the Missouri Veterans Home in Mexico.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m., Thursday, Jan. 3rd at First Baptist Church in Mexico with Dr. Jeff Brown and Rev. Ben Schnipper officiating. Visitation will be Wednesday from 5 until 7 p.m. at Pickering Funeral Home. Burial with Military Honors will be in East Lawn Memorial Park.
Mr. Walker was born Oct. 1, 1919, a son of William Presley and Mary Magdelene (Kesler) Walker. On Aug. 31, 1962, in Columbia, he married Linda Fay Steuber. Mrs. Walker survives.
William was a graduate of Mexico High School where he played clarinet in the band. In 1951 he received a diploma from International Correspon-dence School in surveying and mapping. He also loved sports. In high school he played football, basketball and ran track. He placed second at state in hurdles. He also played baseball on several Mexico teams and even tried out for the Cincinnati Reds Baseball Team but he decided to enlist in the service instead of playing baseball, he raced hydroplane boats, was an avid golfer and bowler and had played on the Kaiser Refractories Leagues. He was city champion in golf once. In his lifetime he scored two hole in ones. He also enjoyed fishing. He and Linda spent winters in Cape Canaveral, Florida from 1981 until 2000.
He was a veteran serving during World War II in the Merchant Marines and Navy.
Mr. Walker worked for A.P. Green for 15 years and then for Kaiser Refractories for 29 years. He retired in 1981. He had also been the co-owner and was operator of the "Mexico Roller Rink".
He is a lifetime member of VFW. He also had been a leader with 4-H, served on the Highway R-3 School Board as Treasurer, and he was a member of First Baptist Church since 1939.
In addition to his wife Linda, survivors include 2 sons, Kevin Walker and wife Nancy, Portland, Ore., and Wayne Walker and wife Phyllis, Mexico; 4 daughters, Marcia Antonides and husband Jim, Peculiar, Mo., Pattie Miller and husband Paul, Jerico Springs, Mo., Becky Schafer and husband Noel, Martinsburg, and Mary Jo Oakes, Waynesville; 13 grandchildren, 16 great-grandchildren, Nephews, John L. Steuber, Columbia, Shawn R. Steuber, Mexico, Eric L. Steuber, Columbia, and William Chorice, Blue Springs.
He was preceded in death by his parents; one brother, Harrison K. Walker; one grandson, Joshua R. Oakes; one nephew, Matt Chorice; and one niece, Diane Walker.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorials be given to Missouri Veterans Home, First Baptist Church, or to Alzheimer's Association. They may be sent in care of Pickering Funeral Home, 403 N. Western, Mexico, MO 65265.
