"One of the most disastrous fires that has occurred in Mexico within recent years destroyed the Ferris Grand Opera House about 11 o'clock Tuesday night, causing a loss estimated at $20,000. The building was owned by Miss Katie Ferris, who had only $5,000 insurance. It is thought the fire was of incendiary origin, as the electric wiring in the building was conduits, the heat was supplied by the city."

"Mail from home is coming in both pro and con on the proposed 1 cent increase in the state sales tax, says Rep. Charles H. Dickey Jr. But the Audrain County representative says it is too early to make a forecast on what the legislature will do on Gov. Dalton's recommendation for a 3-cent tax. Rep. Dickey says he was with the majority in the house in voting down three of the items in the impeachment of Judge Poelker. There were 21 articles, voted on individually as the house impeached the St. Louis County jurist, who will now be tried on the charges before the Supreme Court."

"Audrain Medical Center's net excess revenues last year totaled $1,276,511, a figure that Chuck Jansen, hospital administrator, reported as being about 89 percent of its budgeted goal of $1,420,176. He added that 'This was probably one of the best years that we've ever had.' Total gross patient revenues in 1987 were $29,877,832, with $19,289,126 in total operating expenses. In a separate item discussed at Thursday's meeting of the hospital's board of trustees, the board approved the replacement of a 20-year-old EEG unit at a cost of $18,855; and the replacement of a 12-year-old ophthalmologic operating microscope at an expense of $27,500."

"Under the current state budget crisis, the Mexico School District could possibly face a loss of $411,000 of State funding in June, reported Superintendent Lloyd Little. Little, who attended Gov. Bob Holden's State of the State Address on Jan. 14 told the Mexico Board of Education Tuesday night that it was a serious consideration by the State legislature to withhold a June payment of the Foundation Formula for secondary and higher education to help allay a $350 million shortfall in the budget."
