  • PARIS/COMMUNITY R-6 GIRLS: The Paris Lady Coyotes opened the Sturgeon Tournament Monday with a hard fought win over 5 seed Community R-6 Lady Trojans. Paris started off the game with stellar defense holding Community to 5 first quarter points and 4 second quarter points going on to win 44-31.
"Unfortunately we struggled offensively and weren't able to sustain control of the tempo of the game. We did a very good job early at pushing the tempo and getting out in transition, but we just couldn't finish good opportunities. Community does a very good job of controlling tempo and slowing the game down," said Paris coach Chris Willingham. Paris fell into the trap of playing half court basketball against a bigger more physical team. They struggled to get good looks on offense and to finish. Paris was still ahead 18-9 going to the half.
The third quarter Community did a very good job of controlling tempo and playing aggressive basketball on both ends to cut the game to a 2 point deficit heading to the fourth quarter. With 3 minutes left, Paris went on a 13-2 run to finish the game. "We were very cold from the field shooting less than 20 percent outside the paint," said R-6 coach Bob Curtis. "I was proud of our defensive effort but we really struggled offensively," he added.
Paris made some adjustments defensively, getting back to full court pressure and forcing Community to play uncomfortable. "We hit a couple big shots and did a nice job controlling the ball and getting to the line down the stretch," said Willingham. In the fourth quarter the Lady Coyotes hit 12 out of 16 free throws. Sydnee Playter hit a big 3 for down the stretch to push a 7 point lead to a 10 point lead.
Payton Gruber led the Lady Coyotes with 20 points. For R-6 Emmalee McCoskey scored 12.
Paris is 11-6 overall and 3-2 in conference. R-6 is 9-5 overall and 4-1 in conference.
