COMMUNITY R-6 GIRLS: The Lady Trojans coach Bob Curtis knew Tuesday would be a big game for his team if they wanted to stay in second place in the conference race behind undefeated Silex Lady Owls and the Lady Trojans met the challenge by defeating the Elsberry Lady Indians in double overtime.
Emmalee McCoskey was a monster in the middle scoring 22 points. Amelia Knipfel also had a huge game scoring 11 points and dishing out 4 assists. She also hit the game-winning free-throw with only a few seconds left in the second overtime. It was a war all night long as Elsberry seemed to counter every run the Lady Trojans made with a run of their own.
"We were tied at 45 at the end of regulation due to two clutch free-throws by senior Paige Curtis and then Elsberry went the length of the floor in 7 seconds and hit a runner to send it to overtime," said the R-6 coach.
Curtis ended up with 8 points on the night. Julie Hale also had 4 assists and Paige Harris came up with 4 steals.
In the first overtime the game was tied at 49 with a few seconds to go and the Lady Trojans defense came up with a key stop to send it into double overtime. That is when Knipfel hit one of two free-throws to close the door on a great game, said Curtis.
R-6 is 13-6 overall and 5-1 in conference play.
