Seven Mexico High School Bulldog wrestlers qualified for the 2013 State Wrestling championships which began Thursday at the Mizzou Arena in Columbia. All seven wrestlers advanced to today's competition. The morning was not as productive as the team would have liked, with four wrestlers losing in the first round, including senior Jake Vitale, who had a perfect 47-0 record going into the championships, but in the wrestle-backs, the Bulldogs fared much better.
"We had couple of tough matches in the morning," said MHS Coach Gayle Adams. The wrestlers came back in the afternoon and responded well with all four winning their wrestle-backs. "I was proud of how they battled back to win," added Adams.
"Overall it was a good day," said Adams. The four wrestlers who lost in the first round and won in the second round need to keep winning to stay in the tournament.
This morning, Hunter Smith, Jordan Jones and Payton Turner wrestled in the quarterfinals. If they won they advance to semi-finals. If they lost they had to wrestle again this morning. Jadin Taylor, Jayde Moran, Vitale and Sam Fayad will also wrestle this morning. (Results were not reported by press time).
In the first round Thursday, Hunter Smith (120), Jordan Jones (126) and Payton Turner, (182) won their matches and advanced to today's quarterfinals.
