Mexico High School had three wrestlers still alive in the Missouri High School State Wrestling Tournament Saturday morning with hopes of bringing home three medals and that is what they did. The three, sophomore Hunter Smith, freshman Jordan Jones and senior Jake Vitale started out the morning with their fourth-round wrestle backs. Smith (120) lost by a pin to Brendan Hachtel of St. Charles West; and Jordan Jones (126) lost by a 3-1 decision to Ty Cochran of Harrisonville. Vitale (145) won his match by a 2-1 decision over Grant Taylor of Clinton.
In the final matches for the three MHS wrestlers at the tournament, Smith came in sixth losing by a pin to Chris Johnson of Osage. Jones came in fifth with a 5-0 decision over Branden Beeler of Kirksville. Vitale, who has had a record-breaking year, brought home a third-place medal with a 10-0 major decision over Seth Hummer of Savannah.
The trio ended their season with impressive records. Smith's final record is 32-12; Jones ended his season at 45-8; and Vitale had a near perfect season with a 52-1 record.
MHS Coach Gayle Adams was pleased with all seven wrestlers he took to the state tournament.
"All of them (wrestlers) wrestled well," said Adams who finished up his first season at head coach. "We had a great season and I am very happy with my team." With losing only two seniors he is looking forward to next season. "We have something to build on for next year, including two returning state medalists."
Mexico's remaining four wrestlers, Jadin Taylor, Jayde Moran, Sam Fayad and Payton Turner lost out on Friday.
