Cleaning driveways of snow now properly could save time later
HANNIBAL - After the recent heavy snowfall across northeast Missouri, and the expected additional snow tonight and tomorrow, MoDOT wants to remind everyone of the recommended way to clear the snow from your driveway.
"Unfortunately, snow plowed from roads can end up blocking private driveways for some time," said MoDOT Northeast District Engineer Paula Gough. "We know this is inconvenient, yet with this amount of snow, we are focused on getting the main roads passable," she explained.
Gough said MoDOT crews have been cleaning up from last week's storm this weekend to make room for the additional snow, potentially up to 12 more inches. "We appreciate the cooperation of all citizens in the plowing effort," she added.
In the event of an emergency, citizens are asked to call 911.
MoDOT's priority is to clear the roadways. One thing Missourians can do to minimize the problem is to pile snow that has been shoveled from the driveway on the DOWNSTREAM side of the driveway. Plow blades will then push snow into the area just before your driveway, leaving a much smaller amount in the entrance.
Please remember to have the snow removed away from the entrance far enough to allow one to see oncoming traffic when entering the highway. More information on keeping your driveway clear is available at this link: www.modot.org/road_conditions/keepdrivewayclear.htm.
