School buses receive perfect inspection rating

The annual scheduled inspection of the 27 buses of the Mexico Schools resulted in a 100 percent rating. All buses in the fleet were inspected by a team of eight members of the Missouri State Highway Patrol School Bus Inspection team Feb. 25.
"We had excellent inspection results," Curt Jackson, transportation director, said. "I'm very proud of all our employees who put in a lot of effort every day in maintaining our buses."
The school buses are inspected three times each year. Two of the
inspections are unannounced, and are spot checks of three buses the inspectors select randomly. In the annual inspection, however, all buses undergo a rigorous examination.
"The buses are inspected in a two-part procedure," Jackson said.
"All buses are brought to the parking lot where items such as the lights, emergency exits and horns are checked. Then each bus is brought into the garage for inspection of the rest of the bus, including the undercarriage, engine compartment, braking and suspension system."
Mexico buses run 18 daily a.m. and p.m. routes, transporting approximately 1,100 students. Each individual bus driver conducts a daily pre-route inspection, which is the first step in the safety process. In a walk-through, the drivers make note of any problems such as a suspicious noise, and report the problem.
"Our drivers are very important in maintaining the safety of our fleet of buses," Jackson said. "Also, I'm proud of David Kuda, the supervisor of bus maintenance, and Bill Johnson and Joe Hutchinson who work in the garage."
The work of the transportation department is appreciated by Kevin Freeman, superintendent of schools. "I commend Curt Jackson and David Kuda for their hard work," he said. "The perfect rating not only speaks to being prepared for the inspection, but also to the general maintenance and upkeep of the buses throughout the year. Not only did they achieve this result, they and the grounds personnel moved a lot of snow during the past few days, and I am proud of their success."
