"One room on the third floor of the North Central School was not large enough for all the teachers and applicants for teachers' certificates, who were taking the examination Friday. The examination was held under the supervision of J.L. Shobe, County Superintendent of Schools and his wife. Most of those being examined are young ladies, although several young men are trying for a certificate."

"Steve Taylor, a senior at Mexico High School, has been named local chairman of the Bundle Day Drive next week for the Save the Children Foundation. Also serving on the committee for the drive, which has been a project in the Mexico schools for several years, are Robert Searfoss, Wayne Hunthau-sen, Carol Bailey and Nelson Brown Jr. Mexico school children are requested to take bundles of good used clothing, shoes, galoshes, etc., to their own schools next week. The committee in charge and other helpers will then pick them up for shipment. Save the Children Federation, a 30-year-old, non-sectarian, international welfare organization, is registered with the U.S. State Department Advisory Committee on Voluntary Foreign Aid."

"On the eve of Missouri's first presidential primary, Mexico did not play host to any of the candidates for Oval Office, but politics still entered the local arena as Rep. Harold Volkmer visited the Community Room at the Audrain County Courthouse this morning to discuss recent actions in Congress and answer a myriad of questions. In his opening remarks, Rep. Volkmer referred more to non-action in Congress, indicating disappointment. 'Because we ended up doing nothing about Contra aid. Unless there is some agreement between the House, the Senate, the president, Democrats and Republicans, there may be no action until the summer, although hopefully we'll work something out.' "
