The final score of the quarterfinal game Saturday against the Mexico Bulldogs and Normandy Vikings did not reflect the closeness of the game. It was a hard fought battle by both teams with Normandy coming out on top 60-52.
The Bulldogs came out strong and had a 5-0 lead with 6 minutes left in the first quarter and were leading at the end of the first quarter 13-11.
Jon Anderson had a great first quarter from behind the arc and inside scoring 8 of the Bulldogs first 13 points. The second period went back and forth but the Bulldogs executed a play and Matt Ridgway hit a 3-point field goal to put the Bulldogs up 4 points. Skylar Harrington came up with a steal and hit Jake Willer for a lay-up at the buzzer. The lay-up put the Bulldogs up by 6 points at the half 24-18. The two quick baskets at the end of the second quarter brought the large number of Bulldog fans to their feet.
The third quarter hurt the Bulldogs as Normandy extended their full court pressure which turned into points for Normandy. The Bulldogs were outscored 27-16 in the third quarter and trailed 45-40 going into the fourth quarter. The Bulldogs made several runs in the fourth quarter but could not close the gap.
Coach Brennan Scanlon was pleased with the effort the Bulldogs gave in the first half and especially in the second quarter and is proud of the accomplishements his team had this year with an impressive final record of 24-4.
"We struggled with their defensive pressure and overall team quickness. I am extremely proud of this team and the leadership that these seniors exhibited this season. This is a great group of young men that set goals and achieved all their goals except for a trip to the Final Four," said their coach. "They went through the NCMC with a perfect 11-0 record, repeated for a third straight district championship, and won a sectional title in one of the best basketball games I have been associated with," added Scanlon.
Jon Anderson led the Bulldogs in scoring with 18 points and 12 rebounds, Jake Willer and Cole Jaramillo had 10 points, Matt Ridgway and Jae'on Nunnelly put in 5 points, and Jake Anderson chipped in 4.
The loss ends the basketball careers of five senior standouts, Jake Willer, Jon Anderson, Jake Anderson, Jae'on Nunnelly and Matt Ridgway. These young men have been committed as Bulldog basketball players. They finish with a three-year record on varsity with 74-11, three District Championships, two NCMC titles, two Sectional Championships and two trips to the State Quarterfinals. Normandy advances to the final four on Thursday with Sikeston as their first-round opponent.
