Alfonso "Al" Springs was born on Oct. 29, 1931 in Mexico, Mo. to Margaret Springs. His uncle, Raymond Baker served as his surrogate father, and he and his first cousin, Danny Baker were raised as brothers. Al attended school at Garfield Elementary School, and Garfield High School in Mexico, and then moved to Illinois where he graduated from Lake Forest High School, located in Lake Forest, Ill.
At 20 years of age, Alfonso enlisted into the Army and spent two years in the military. He married Lena Henderson after his honorable discharge, and he and Lena were married for more than a half of century before she died in 2004. While he and Lena resided in Illinois, Al worked for the City of Lake Forest as a laborer. He and Lena then moved back to Mexico, where Alfonso worked for the City of Mexico performing laborer duties until he retired.
Al is survived by his cousin, Danny Baker of Ten Mile, Tenn.; his sister-in-law, DeReath Pasley, his brother-in-law, Robert Pasley, both of Mexico, Mo; his cousin, Faye Warren of Atlanta, Ga.; his favorite niece, Vickie Pasley of Chicago, Ill.; nephews, Robert Pasley, Jr. of Houston, Texas and Jerry Starks, Jr. of North Chicago, Ill.; long-time friend Alicia Otis of Santa Fe, N.M., and a host of other nieces, nephews, and cousins. Alfonso was preceded in death by his wife, his mother, and three sisters, Barbara Bryant, Dorothy Gibbons, and Beverly Starks. Alfonso died peacefully in his home on March 22, 2013. The services for Mr. Springs will be on April 2, at 2 p.m. at Arnold Funeral Home. The visitation will commence at 1 p.m. at the same location. Rev. T.L. Garner will officiate the services.
