    "Sam Evans has thirty hens that laid 1,116 eggs during January, February and March. In January, they laid 248, in February, 384 and March 484. Sam agrees with The Ledger that there is no more profitable business with less investment than growing chickens in Missouri. There should be fifty chicken ranches in Audrain County."

    "The sale of about 85 horses, ponies and mules in Ham Ferris's annual spring horse consignment sale drew a big crowd to the arena at Mexico Stockyards Co. yesterday afternoon. Many of those present came just to look. Others bid on tack and some bought horses. The stock sold extremely well, knowledgeable spectators agreed. Several of the horses sold for around $275. Many horses sold for under $100 and many ponies sold for around $40, however.

    "The Chicago, Missouri & Western Railway Co. filed for federal bankruptcy-court protection Friday in Chicago, citing a burdensome debt despite recent improvements in operations. The company last April purchased the Illinois Central Gulf Railroad which goes through Mexico. The 632-mile line runs from Joliet, Ill., to Kansas City, with a spur from Roodhouse, Ill., to St. Louis. The company also operates the Amtrak passenger line between Joliet and St. Louis. The CM&W listed debts of $131.8 million and assets of $103.5 million in its filing for Chapter 11 protection from creditors."

    "The Audrain County Sheriff's Office and the Mexico Parents As Teachers conducted a Child Identification Program Thursday in the lobby of Central Office of the Mexico Public Schools. This is the 41st Child Identification Program conducted by the sheriff's office. Since the beginning of the program, more than 4,400 children have been given an identification packet. The parents are given a KidCare ID booklet containing their child's picture, current height and weight."
