  • MHS SOCCER: The weather was not great, wet field, drizzling rain, but the outcome of the Mexico High School soccer game, was good. The Lady Bulldogs played host to the Marshall Owls in an NCMC conference game Monday night and were victorious 8-0.
Mexico scored its first goal with approximately 19 minutes left in the half, making the score 1-0 in the first half of the match.
"After halftime we really kind of put our foot on the gas a little bit and knocked in seven more (goals)," remarked MHS Coach Brad Ellebracht.
"We saw some growth in the maturity of some younger players, and their approach to competing last night," he added.
The first half of the game started just like the game the Lady Bulldogs played on Friday. "We were up 1-0 at half and really had the better of the play up to that point. The difference came in the way we responded to that situation in the second half," stated Ellebracht. Mexico ended up losing 2-1 on Friday.
"Last night, obviously, was a much more assertive response," said the coach.
For Mexico, Keagan Riddick scored 3 goals and 2 assists; Bailey Reed scored 3 goals and 1 assist; Rachel Hightshoe and Caroline Finck each added a goal; and Sydney Schutte added an assist. Abby Dick got the shut-out in goal for Mexico.
Mexico, 5-4 overall and 2-3 in conference standings, will take to the field again Friday at home against Warrenton for both junior varsity and varsity matches.
The junior varsity also won 1-0 with Lauren Ralls scoring the only goal of the game.
MMS TRACK: Mexico Middle School competed in the NCMC Conference Relays Saturday at Kirksville and had an overall great day of competition with 26 season bests, three new seventh grade school records and a championship in the seventh grade boys division.
"We strategically placed our seventh grade boys in their events with the thought of maximum points and the goal of going for the team win. Everyone delivered and we beat two consistently strong track schools in Kirksville and Hannibal. I am also very proud of the 26 season bests because we are always looking for improvement and competitiveness and many of the kids are getting stronger and stronger," remarked MHS Coach Cindy Allison.
The next meet is scheduled for Thusday at Boonville.
