BASEBALL: The outcome of the Mexico Bulldogs baseball game against the Boonville Pirates was much better Wednesday night than when the teams met earlier this month. Mexico lost the first game, but were victorious Wednesday with a 4-2 final in the NCMC contest.
The game was scoreless for the first four innings. In the fifth, Mexico scored 1 and Boonville scored 2 which would be all the Pirates scored in the game. In the top of the sixth Mexico scored 1 tying the game and then in the seventh scored 2.
"We have played much better ball in the last 7 to 8 games," stated MHS Coach Keith Louder. Boonville is a District opponent and the win gives the two teams a split when the seatings come out for districts. "This was a big win for us," remarked Louder.
Cody Creed received the win, pitching a complete game. He struck out 6 and walked 3.
Defensively, the Bulldogs had an error-free game. Offensively, Tyler Bracht was 2-2, Frank Nickoley was 2-3 with an RBI, Garrett Carroz went 1-2 and Austyn Sampo was 2-3 with an RBI.
Mexico's overall record is now 9-5 and 4-4 in NCMC. The Bulldogs will travel to Fulton on Friday for another NCMC game against the Hornets.
Mexico: 4R, 10H, 0E, 6 LOB.
Boonville: 2R, 6H, 3E, 5 LOB.
The junior varsity game was stopped in the fourth inning when a Boonville player was injured after colliding with teammate. The score was 4-3 Boonville. For Mexico Austin Logerman hit a 2-run home run in the first inning and Karsten Ekern was 1-1.
GOLF: Mexico Bulldogs golf team competed in a cold and windy NCMC tournament Wednesday at Heritage Hills in Moberly. Mexico came in fifth with a score of 341. Other teams and their scores included: Hannibal 307, Marshall 322, Moberly 332, Fulton 337, Kirksville 347 and Boonville 376.
"Although we were not as competitive as we should have been, we did have four scores in the 80s for 18 holes including newcomer Brock Fuemmeler playing as the sixth man and becoming a vital part of our overall score," remarked MHS Coach John Knipfel. Austin Kelsay carded the low score with an 83.
Mexico's record is now 33-22. The team returns to action today against Fulton at Arthur Hills in Mexico.
