During HCC awards ceremony

The Davis Hart Career Center 2013 Awards Ceremony was held at Mexico High School Emmons Hall Wednesday to honor seniors and outstanding students from Mexico and area schools who attend HCC.
The climax of the evening was awarding the 2013 Davis H. Hart Award. This year's winner is Shawn Basnett, Paris, a student in the Auto Mechanics Technology class. Linda Meidler, daughter of Davis H. Hart, and his granddaughter Amy Mey-strick, presented the award to Basnett.
Each year, in honor of Davis H. Hart's leadership, senior students who excel in their career and technical goals are nominated by their instructor for the Davis H. Hart Award. Students who have a 95 percent or better attendance record, a 3.0 or higher GPA, have mastered 80 percent of their competencies within their program and are two-year completers within a program are eligible for nomination by their instructor. These nominees then submit their resumes and are interviewed before a panel of judges.Three others were nominated for the award. They include: Zach Allen, Van-Far, Computer Networking and Repair; Gib Graham, Ag Diesel; and Cheryl Orscheln, Health Services. Graham and Orscheln are students at Mexico High School.
Chris Denham, director of HCC, welcomed students, faculty, visiting administrators and families attending.
Before the awards ceremony began Ben Rogers, 2012 Davis H. Hart award recipient, addressed the group (by video), stating how much HCC helped him get ready for college. He added the hands-on approach at HCC is valuable to students when they enter college. He also expressed his appreciation to the faculty at HCC.
The faculty introduced their students and presented certificates and awards. A student from each class was named Outstanding Student of The Year. The student and his/her class include: Jeffrey Fischer, Van-Far, Ag Diesel Technology; Gabe Huff, Fulton, Auto Mechanics Technology; Michele Griffin, Mexico, Business; Zachary Allen, Van-Far, Computer Servicing Technology; Keegan Evans, Mexico, Computer Programming/Web Design; Nicole Oliver, Mexico, Cosmetology; Lexi Charlick, Paris, Early Childhood Professions; Cierra Harpole, Mexico, Graphic Arts Occupations; Amanda Beal, Mexico, Health Services Aide; Jake Vitale, Mexico, Marketing; Brandon Resa, Mexico, Project Lead The Way; and Shane Ball, Mexico, Welding Technology.
Students who received a portfolio for completing a two-year/three-hour course for competency and attendance requirements include: Keith Caldwell, Chelsie Cochran, Tina McCoskey, Community R-6; Kennedy Bailey, Kylea Dudley, Gary Grawe, Gabe Huff, and Nikolas Kellem, Fulton; Shane Ball, Amanda Beal, Keegan Evans, Gib Graham, Christopher Marks, and Cheryl Orscheln, Mexico; Thomas Blakely and Elizabeth Saunders, North Callaway; Shawn Basnett and Lexi Charlick, Paris; Zach Allen, Brandon Billings, Jordan Brandt, and Jeffery Fischer, Van-Far.
Students who competed in Technical Skills and SkillsUSA were recognized, as well as Breaking Traditions students.
In addition to honoring the students, Chris Denham, HCC Director gave recognition and expressed appreciation to retiring Early Childhood Professions teacher Barb Denio.
Following the ceremony, a reception was held for the students and their families.
Students from the following high schools attend HCC: Centralia, Fulton, Montgomery County R-2, Paris, Van-Far, North Callaway, Community R-6 and Mexico.
