American Biblical Society founded

Although there were local Bible societies in our country's early years, men like Samuel J. Mills and Elias Boudinot saw the need for a larger society under which all the smaller societies could function more effectively. The American Biblical Society was founded on May 11, 1816, to assist local and regional societies and "to encourage the wider circulation of the Holy Scriptures throughout the world."
