  • Weather conditions were perfect for the sectional track meet held in Mexico Saturday with 28 schools participating. The meet was run very smoothly with most of the events starting on time through the day with credit going to event organizers.
The top four finishers in each event moves on to the state competition which will be in Jefferson City Friday and Saturday.
For the Mexico athletes it was a very good day. Fifteen MHS boys and girls qualified May 11 in District competition to move on to sectionals. Out of those 15, eight qualified for state in nine events. Jami Brandow qualified in two events.
Sectional Champions include: Phoebe Frazer, shot put; Zori Holman, high jump; and Jami Brandow, 3200. Brandow also qualified in the 1600 meter race.
Rounding out the field of state entries include: Christian McKeown, 800 meter run; Malik Holman, 3200 meter run; Jake Anderson, high jump; Anne Baker, shot put; and Karen Baker, triple jump.
Karen Baker shattered her personal best in the triple jump and her sister Anne impressively bettered her personal best in the shot put. "The Mexico girls would have been second of 28 teams represented if team scores had been kept placing 2.5 points behind McClure-Berkley of St. Louis, remarked Buck Green, MHS Coach. "This meet brought all the exceptions and hype of a very quality meet and it delivered," added Green.
DayNeisha Shivers in a very impressive effort missed qualifying in the 300 hurdles by hundredths of a second but had a huge personal best. The boys relay entries in the 4x400 and 4x800 did not qualify but ran well with the 4x800 posting a season best time, running into a meat grinder of relay teams, according to Green.
Green credits his coaches for the success of the teams. "It is a tribute to the coaches who have worked with these athletes this season," stated Green. Coaches include: Sarah Gleeson, Austin Miller, horizontal jumps; Greg O'Connor, sprints/relays; Lucas Breneman, distances; Steve Haag, throws; and Billy Sue Rabion, high jump.
