The former manager of Handi-Shop Inc., Rodney L. Shivers of Mexico, appeared in Audrain County Associate Division Court Monday on alleged felony stealing charges. Shivers waived his formal arraignment and his case has been continued to next month.
Shivers appeared for his arraignment before Judge Linda Hamlett, with his attorney, Kenneth Stanley Clay, of Columbia. A hearing was set for 9 a.m. June 18 in the Audrain Associate Division Court. The judge also ordered Shivers to be fingerprinted.
The Handi-Shop Board of Directors issued a statement in January, stating that "During the course of the annual audit, an abnormality was discovered in the financial records of Handi-Shop, Inc. An investigation is currently being conducted by law enforcement authorities."
Shivers was later served a warrant in April and arrested on theft/stealing charges (for $500 or more, but less than $25,000). Another former Handi-Shop employee, Joanna M. Borgmeyer, was also charged with the same offense. Both Shivers and Borgmeyer posted $10,000 bonds.
Borgmeyer's hearing is scheduled for 9 a.m. Friday in the Audrain Associate Division Court.
