Eight participate, four medal in state championship meet
The Mexico track & field teams capped off a very successful season with an exciting finish at the state meet.
Eight Bulldogs and Lady Bulldogs competed Friday and Saturday in the Missouri High School Track and Field State Championships and four came home with medals.
Receiving medals (the first eight receive All-State honors) were junior Zori Holman, second in the high jump at 5'6"; sophomore Karen Baker, sixth in the triple jump at 35'8,50"; junior Christian McKeown, seventh in the 800 meter run, 1:58.2; and freshman Malik Holman, seventh, 3200 meter run, 9:47.
Also competing for Mexico were: senior Jake Anderson, tied for 10th in the high jump at 6'; seniors Anne Baker and Phoebe Frazer in the shot put. Frazer was 13th throw 34'10''; and Baker was 14th throwing 32"11.50"; junior Jami Brandow, 13th in 3200 meter run at 12:06.10. Brandow also competed in the 1600 meter run and came in 13th at 5:38.86.
"Jami's time would appear to be a sub performance for her, but the strategy was to get out and run with the top eight as long as possible and the faster pace was difficult to hold," said MHS Coach Bucky Green.
"All of these athletes who were state-qualified ended a very good season at Jefferson City this weekend," said the coach. "For Malik (Holman) to place in the 3200 as a freshman was extremely difficult as this usually falls to older runners. His time was a personal best by 21 seconds. Christian (McKeown) also ran a personal best with 1:58.192 in the preliminary's and 1:58.77 in the finals," said Green.
"We say goodbye to some very important seniors from this state group – Jake Anderson, Phoebe Frazer and Anne Baker," stated Green. But the positive side is the returning of Karen Baker, McKeown, Malik and Zori Holman with several teammates who were not at state.
"As a coaching staff we are already excited about next season," summed up Green.
